Meet the team…
Mr Manning – I moved to the island in the summer of 2011 and have been teaching at St Sampson’s for the past 2 years, becoming Head of Department in April 2012. Originally from Winchester, I attended Bournemouth University and achieved a 2:1 in Sports Development and Coaching Sciences before completing a Secondary Teaching PGCE, with Masters credits, at Southampton University. I spent 3 years teaching at Bay House School in Gosport before relocating to Guernsey.
I have been involved in numerous sports from a young age, first playing and now coaching. I worked at AFC Bournemouth for 4 years coaching football, spent 2 years in America with Challenger Sports and have worked as a football scout for Chelsea, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Oxford. I am currently coaching the Star Trophy Island football team.
My main passion is football and I currently play for Rangers in the Priaulx League.
Mr Isabelle – has held his position as PE teacher at St Sampson’s for 4 years. He completed an undergraduate degree at Manchester Metropolitan University in BA (Hons) Sports Coaching and Development and went on to Liverpool John Moores University to complete a Post Graduate in Secondary Physical Education.
Mr Isabelle has a strong coaching background carrying out 9 months coaching in the USA. He is also currently one of the coaches for the Guernsey Star Trophy under 15 football squad.
He has represented the island at athletics, tennis and football. Currently playing for Guernsey FC on a regular basis. Mr Isabelle also represented the England Amateur team in Croatia in the UEFA Regions Cup, playing right back in a 3-0 victory over Wales. He scored his first goal for the Guernsey team against the Falklands Islands in his debut International Islands Games tournament in the Isle of Wight.
Miss Addlesee –
Miss Addlesee is very happy to be the newest member of the PE department having joined St. Sampson’s High School in September 2013.
She studied at The University of Exeter from 2006 – 2010 where she achieved a 2:1 BSc (Hons) in Exercise and Sports Sciences and a PGCE in Secondary Education.
Miss Addlesee is a keen athlete. She trains regularly with the GIAAC sprint squad and competes for the island on a regular basis over 400 metres.
PE Questionnaire Results
In July 2014 the PE department handed out 104 questionnaires to students across years 7-10. The results were as follows:
- 81% of students said they enjoyed PE lessons. 17% said they were OK and only 2% said they did not enjoy PE lessons.
- 82% of students said they participate in all PE lessons
- 52% of students said they liked the PE kit
- 59% of students said they preferred PE in groups set by ability
- The most popular sports were football, tchoukball, softball, netball, dodgeball, trampolining and badminton
- The sporting areas which students showed a dislike for were hockey, swimming and rounders
- Students wished to see boxing, gym, cheerleading added to the curriculum with more opportunities for tennis and fencing
- 52% of students said that ALL PE staff had expertise within the subject. 48% said some PE teachers had expertise, 0 students thought that no PE staff had expertise in the subject
- 57% of students said they had attended an extra-curricular activity
- Of those students who did not attend an extra-curricular club, the following reasons were given: “I have to catch the bus home”, “I am lazy”, “I just want to go home and sleep”, “I don’t like doing clubs”, “Because I can’t be bothered”, “too busy and not interested”.
General feedback comments about PE during 2013-2014 – “I love PE”, “I like all the teachers and PE can be fun”, “ I think the PE lessons are good and they cover most sports but we should get rid of double theory”, “Well taught and staff are committed”, “teachers are supportive and motivating”, “Get a navy blue kit”, “I prefer separate boys and girls groups”, “We should always vote for what we want to do”, I don’t like PE because I am lazy and not into sports”, “I like to have more PE”, “lessons are great and the teachers are fab”
